Can you race with a CEL?

My focus threw a CEL for a EVAP(?) emission leak. Before I figured out the strange sound in my car was caused by shot motor mounts i thought it might be the exhaust mani heat sheild vibrating in place and the screws holding it on didn't seem too tight so i tried to tighten them and it cracked right around the screw so if it wasn't vibrating before it would be now...so I took it off. Is the lack of a heat shield potentially causing the CEL? wouldn't have any idea how but the removing of the heat shield is the only thing i've changed in the car and I can't find any leak.

when you had the code read did they offer to clear/reset the code? maybe it was just a momentary issue.

you didn't, I was just jokin around. but i cleared it when it first occured about a month ago, and it reappeared just before me posting this. Both times it came on I was on the interstate, I've been too busy/lazy to clear it since.
