I'm not asking about DOT slicks here, I need help with the real thing. Talking to Jerry about tires for the RX2, he was telling me that he ran some pretty low air pressues. 25 psi up front and 27 psi in the rear. In my experience that is WAY to low, but I have no frame of referance for true slicks. Jerry is telling me that the sidewalls on the Hoosiers I just picked up are really stiff, and those are the air pressures he recalls running. Any insight? BTW Hoosier 20.0x8x13's for sunday. And I am promising the return of Thunder Pumpkin. :D

Yes you run lower pressures with slicks. I run 28 lbs on the 320 for track events. With the cantilever slicks you also run less camber then with DOT R compounds. I run a little less the 1 degree of camber. Also you can carry more speed in the corners then with any other type of tire. It will take a little getting use to doing. Not sure what compound you are using but with the harder compounds (higher number) they take a little longer to warm up. At MAM it takes about 2 laps until they get full stick with the hardest compound. For autocrossing I would go with the softest compound.

Best way to tell tire pressure and alignment is with a pyrometer.

Thanks Ron. We mounted up the wheels and tires last night. My god the car just looks cocky as hell.

Ok dragging this one back. Looking at replacing the Hoosier R45's I have been running for next year. I have found a site that sells the Hoosier R35A for 178.00 each and another that sells the Goodyear Eagle Sports Car slicks in the R430 compound for 177.00 each. Looking for opinions on which is the better tire. Sizes are the same and price is close enough to be a non issue. What do you think?

R35A's are really soft for a full body car. I don't remeber what your car weights but you might want R45's or higher...

The FSAE runs R25's and they don't last long on that 500lbs car. But if budget isn't a concern get the R35's or hell even the 25's

25's are way to soft, but the 45's seems to be holding up well. They are the same price either way.

What size are you currently running?

If you can get the R45B compound it will hold up and little better and does not over heat as easy as the older R45 and R45A compounds. On the R45B the construction of the sidewall was improved, and they are not as temperature sensitive as previous iterations.

I have been running the hardest compound R55A at the track events and drivers schools. We tend to get a large amount of track time so I something that handle a lot of heat cycles.

The main thing with the slicks and also most R compound tires is that the different compound ratings have that much more "stick" then others. It is just how fast it gets up to temp and how wide the temp range the tire can handle.

Who are you looking at ordering the tire from? On the RR slicks the prices are mostly fixed so shipping can be the greater cost. I have been order mine from Hoosier Tire North in Rogers, MN

http://www.hoosiertirenorth.com/

They get a truck in from the factory every Thursday and then I normally get my set on Friday or Monday via SpeeDee Delivery. I only have to pay shipping from Rogers, MN. Since they are shipping across state lines they are not charging sales tax.

A other place to look is the Hoosier discontinued tire page. You get free UPS ground shipping ($7 processing fee for the total order) for all on-line orders from this page. This inventory changes a lot so you may want to keep an eye on the site. They don't have too much on there now unless you have a old Grand Am Rolex Series car you want to run.

Tire size is 20.0x8.0x13. So I should stick with the R45B for nasacross? I won't see a difference in the grip between the 35 and the 45? The place I was looking was http://www.bobwoodmantires.com/index.php

Any opinion on the Goodyear tires Ron?

I made a quick call and the price on the 20.0x8.0x13 from Hoosier Tire North is also $178. Shipping will be $6 to $7 for each tire and no sales tax. They get their truck in on Tuesday (not Thursday) and they place their order at 9:30 am on Monday. So if you place the order by Monday AM, you should have them on Wednesday.

Due to the fact that it is autocrossing, you will see the tire temp come in sooner with the R35 compared to the R45 so the max grip level will come in sooner but in the end the grip level will be about the same. (ie you will be able to pull the same G levels with both compounds) The R45's will be able to be at that temp for a longer period of time before the tire temp gets too high and the grip drops off. (Think track events)

With the R55 I have to do 2 to 3 progressively faster laps around MAM before everything is up to temp and I can push them hard. With the R45B it only takes 2 laps. With the R35 I bet I could be on it with in the the first lap. The trouble is that the R35 would not last the full 30 to 45 minutes before the tire temp get too high and I would kill the tire.

20.0x8.0x13 is a common size in SCCA H Production and GT Lite classes. I can ask around for some used take offs you are interested. I plan on going to Road America on Sept 13 and 14th for a double race, then to Topeka to watch the SCCA Runoffs in October 9 to 12th , and then to St Louis the end of Oct for a double race weekend. So I can haul them back for you if I can find some.

Take offs would be a better bang for the buck. What are they getting for a set?
