I've been looking at rims for dedicated auto-x tires (or dedicated tires for all summer...i haven't decided yet) and all of the rims i've been looking at have a recomended sidewall of 60 while all the tires i've been looking at are 50's. Does this really matter?

Tony, I have been running 50 series sidewalls and shorter for a long time now. You will be fine.

for tires I'm thinkin azenis unless the star specs are worth ~20-25 more a tire for a narrower tread and taller sidewall (though i probably couldn't tell a 205 from 195 anyway and probably not a 55 sidewall from a 50 either). But I've read good reviews about the bfgoodrich g-force sport and they're also cheap. I'm thinking if i decided to go with dedicated winter/summer tires i'll get the bf's but if i just use an all season all year with auto-x only tires i'll get the azenis, or star specs. Maybe even somethin better since it'd be auto-x only but then again i'm still pretty green for better than the best street tires.

For rims i'm just lookin at 15s to keep rubber cheap...

I checked discount tire direct (which has free shipping btw) and the direzza's are $95 a pop for 15" wheels, and the azenis are $82 a pop, so only a $52 difference. I'm pretty positive you'd be better off with the Star specs even though they're 10mm less wide compared to the azenis.

I know BFG makes alot of different G-force tires, you are referring to these, right?

If so...

IMHO, don't get the G-force sport (unless you do go with a tire you can run all year round; even though it's not that good in the snow!). I've actually had those, and they are comparable (dry handling//grip) to my winter tires I just put on; which is not a good thing! :)
Soft sidewalls and not much grip in the dry, trust me on this one (I had them on the evo previously)!

EDIT:

Also, keep in mind Tony, the Star Spec's weigh about 1.8 lbs less (each),

They also have 10/32's tread depth as compared to 8/32's on the azenis (that could be good or bad depending on how you look at it I guess). I feel as though they perform well right out of the box. I bought mine brand new at the beginning of the spring, and they felt great even when basically brand new.

Man, I sound like a sales rep from Dunlop... :D

Yeah so did quincy at the awards banquet.

I guess it'll be the star specs then... but I am intrigued that they were brand new in the spring and were run into the ground by the end of summer... not a real concern as I'm pretty set on only using them for auto -x

Keep in mind Tony, that this was my first year autoxing and I really learned alot from the beginning of the year to the end. I know I was REALLY hard on my tires, often using the tires to slow me down in the corners, rather than being hard on the brakes before the turn. This absolutely shredded them. I didn't really realize what I was doing til the latter part of the season and tried to correct my driving style in and out of the turns.

I still probably have MAYBE 3-4 events left on them for next year. I also daily drove on them about 15-20 miles a day from early spring to this winter.

I'm not sure how much your car weighs (2600ish?), but mine is around 3350 and front heavy. I'm pretty positive they'll last longer on your car compared to mine. I think you're making a wise choice though. :)

If I do not end up going with R-comps this coming spring, I'll probably go with the star specs again, or maybe try the new NT05's coming from Nitto early 2009. I feel as though I have ALOT to learn yet before going up to R-comps...

Yeah I'm sure it was/is a lot harder to learn in such a quick car...and you saw the coopers, with a 560 treadwear, and that's even with TONS less power than you.

I'm hoping I don't have to totally re-learn how to auto-x with new tires + the ability to not go into understeer immediately. But since traffics died down after summer ended and gas got pretty much free I've adopted a pretty spirited driving style so I think I'll still be able to feel my way around.

Hey Tony, you might want to jump on this. 195/55/15's for 77 each. Bridgstone is a damn good tire company. Just something to think about.

I guess I don't know what the Starspecs are going for.

Ok so a little digging on Tire Rack. The Dunlops and the Bridgstones are damn close. Price is the only real difference. 77 for the Bridgestone vs 91 for the Dunlops.
