Guys/Gals...

I'm contemplating going with a set of 4 point harness this coming season for autox only. Last year I was sliding around quite a bit more than I thought I would. My knee especially took a beating against my door.

Are there any stipulations or rules as to how they are to be mounted? Do I need a harness bar, or can I mount them to rear seat anchors?

I'd also like to hear some CG lock users chime in. Do they really keep you in place? I may just end up going this route, as long as they work well enough to keep my knee unbruised! :D

Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Look at the Schroth Rally 3 or 4.

I've sat a demo of the CG lock and it definately holds your butt into the seat... but nothing for your torso. That may or not be an issue for you. I personally know a National Champion Miata driver who only uses a lap belt.

The cheapest way to get yourself planted into the seat (esp. if you have a Japanese car) is to do the factory seatbelt lock trick. Just yank the belt real hard so it locks before you clip in into the latch and presto... instant 3 point harness.

I think I still have a Schroth Harness laying around and a couple 5/6 point SFI out of date setup that I would be willing to sell. I need to check what I have...

I got a harness in the miata last year and it was awesome. You really get a better feel for what the car is doing.

Ron, let me know when you find out what you have laying around...

Thanks!

Todd- I will take the one you had in the Driver's seat if you are looking to replace them.

Brent the harnesses are well worth the money. I spent 60 bucks a side for SFI legal belts from Summit. Well worth the price and then some.

Thanks Dustin! I'm pretty much dead set on getting a 4 point harness now! Just looking for some good deals. :D

I have a set of Schroth Rallyecross harnesses in my Subaru. I assume the evo is your dd as is my subaru so I'll pass on some of my concerns.

I was dead set on getting a wrap style harness, but if I were to do it again I would get the bolt in point harnesses. The wrap style isn't quite as clean and you have to have the belts mounted near the rear package shelf anyways to get enough stretch out of the belts in high speed accident to make any use of your airbag (which you'll probably need unless you're driving around with a hans on).

The belt is one of very few that is DOT approved as the other two harnesses in the rallye line. The big selling point (and probably the reason it's one of the few approved) is the "ASM" which is nothing more than some sewn up belt in one of the shoulder belts that rips so your body flails sideways in and attempt to keep you from sliding under the lap belt. It's a problem that plagues every four point belt harness and is the reason that, at some tracks, they have banned the use of four point belts.. but even allowing three point belts.
The schroth is exempt from the bans but I still would have rather just got a 6 point and not worried about keeping the lap belt crazy tight. I've never had a cop ask me about the belts anyways so I would assume they would let a 6 point slide without a dot number.

Also, unrelated to harness type, every time a passenger gets in the car you have to adjust the harness for them if you consider their life to be of much value. It get's old quick and it's easy to be lazy and drive around with no belts so you might want to look into their addon adjustment pulls. It look's like the 3 and 4 are more forgiving of daily driving than my harness anyways. There aren't going to be pre-tensioners firing if you ace something (or get hit by someone else) so the belts need to be really really tight.

So anyways if you are still dead-set on a 4 point get the Rallye 3 or the Rallye 4 (if you car is compatible). I personally wish I would have got a 6 point with bolt in attachment in the subaru. We were going to put 4 points int he gtm but the laydown seating really needs a 6 point. I'll be doing that in April so I'll let you know if I was wrong all along.

I agree with alot of your post. I did end up getting the Schroth Rallye 4 harness for the driver's side only. I'm going to leave the passenger side alone, because as you pointed out, different passengers will have to adjust it each and every time. These harnesses aren't the easiest to adjust quickly, so I'll let the passengers slide around! :D

I'm NOT planning on using these harnesses while I daily drive though. The nice thing about these, is I can still use my normal seat belt with the harness installed. I actually installed the harness a couple weeks ago just to see how it fits/etc, and it went pretty smoothly. So far I'm very satisfied with the purchase and can't wait to test it out this spring!

The only thing you might want to remember is that if you ever do any HPDE events... many clubs want equal restraints for the passenger. (that's why I have Schroth harness on both front seats in both cars)
